Franklin County Municipal Court judges and officials want to thank everyone who came out and helped or supported the Case Sealing and Expungement Clinic on Saturday. Held at the Westgate Community Center, staff from the Court's Self Help Center, Legal Aid of Southeast and Central Ohio, Justice Bus, pro-bono attorneys, and others who assisted the 300+ pre-registrants and walk-ins who attended. Municipal Court and Common Pleas Judges were on hand with representatives from the Municipal and Common Pleas Clerk of Court offices, to assist those taking meaningful steps toward a fresh start. Ohio law stipulates what crimes can be considered for a case expungement or sealing. Penalties ordered at sentencing must be completed as well as a waiting period of months or years depending on the crime, before a judge can consider granting the request. These convictions are often barriers to a fresh start limiting jobs and housing.
For those who were unable to attend, year‑round record‑sealing support is available at the Municipal Court’s Self Help Center, located on the 16th floor at 375 S. High St. Walk‑ins are welcomed from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. In addition to criminal record sealing/expungement, Self Help Center staff provide legal resources, guidance on eviction‑record removal, mediation services, and civil case assistance for unrepresented parties.
