Assessment Tools

Assessments provide valuable information to the officer and judge and serve as a guide for individualized case planning. The use of assessments increases the likelihood of successful completion of supervision. The assessment process lasts approximately 45 minutes and involves a series of questions related to the current offense, any past involvement with the criminal justice system, and some are questions related to employment, family, friends, and substance use. The purpose of the assessment is not to pass judgment but, to provide personalized information that will help ensure that the Department is providing the appropriate type and level of supervision.

The Department utilizes a suite of validated assessment tools in its differentiated risk and needs based supervision response:

  • Ohio Risk Assessment System (ORAS)
  • Impaired Driving Assessment (IDA)
  • Ontario Domestic Assault Risk Assessment (ODARA)
  • Domestic Violence Risk/Needs Assessment (DVRNA)
  • Women's Risk/Needs Assessment (WRNA)

The Department also follows a comprehensive and customized Behavioral Management System in its response to non-compliant and prosocial behaviors.
